Packaging Brief - Action Plan, Skills Analysis

At the end of a brief there are few ways to help evaluate my strengths and weakness through out the brief and to evaluate my skills.

Packaging Brief - Final Outcomes

Well today is the hand in day and I though I'd post some images of my final outcomes for this brief.

Packaging Brief

I though I'd update the blog with some more development images for the packaging brief.

As you can see these images gives a slight feel of what direction I'm going and the colors I'm using.

Weekly Reflection

LO5
Looking back on this week I've started to develop my ideas further and I've managed my time well as I think I'm on schedule. The only problem with this brief is there is quite a few different final outcome that I have to do, like the actual box you use for sending records as well as envelopes to but the invoice in, promotional cards that could be included n the packaging to help promote the brand. As all the outcomes are different it quite a juggle to proprieties everything and make sure that I don't forget something.

Packaging Brief - Development

My time plan for this week includes development of my Phonica packaging ideas so I thought I'd post some print screens of my work and how its progressing.

LO5

Obviously as Phonica is a record store some of my packaging ideas reflected this. I though it would be silly for the packaging not to reflect the company.

Plan of the week

LO2
The plan for this week is the developmental of my initial ideas.

The deadline of this brief is the 30th October so I have a about four weeks left for development and finalization of my packaging outcomes. This seems like quite a lot of time so I'm quite confident that I will not be rushing when it comes to hand-in.

Inspiration - Sara Elizabeth Berks

Sara Elizabeth Berks is a graphic designer and artist based in Brooklyn, New York. I think I first saw some of her work on Pinterest and I just had to see more so I found her amazing website www.saraberks.com

I just though I would show everyone what is inspiring me lately.

Each booklet includes projects based on the typefaces used. All the exploratory text was pulled from book she was reading during that time period.

LO5
I really love how even though they all are based on different typefaces that they work so cohesively as a collection. The main reason these images stood out to me is that I loved the simplistic but unique layout of the booklets that does nothing but enhance the content of the page which I think is what good editorial deign is all about.

Weekly Reflection

LO5
In my plan of the week I made myself a plan outlining the whole week and the tasks that I want to accomplish before Friday.

I've managed to complete all the tasks that I set out at the beginning of the week and I've finished my initial ideas and feel ready to move onto development on Monday.

Packaging Brief - Ideas Generation

This week I had to present all of the research that I did on this brief to a small group of the class.

LO3
I think the presentation went okay, at the start of this course I was terrified when it came to any presentations I had to give in front of an audience, but the more I do the better I get. I think that this skill is something that will only be developed the more you do it, the only way I could get used to talking in front of an audience is just be doing it again and again and gaining experience. I'm glad that I've had this opportunity to practice my communication skills as this is a very important part of working with real clients and something I must get used to.

The rest of the week was spent sketching my initial ideas out on paper as I've identified in past tutorials that this is a skill that I would like to make sure I focus on, my initial sketch work and really fleshing out and idea before I move onto a computer.

Plan of the week

LO2
Last week I completed all of my research for the brief and chose a company to design the packaging for. The plan for this week is.

- Present research
- Brainstorming and ideas generation

OneNineFourStudio - Presentation Talk

LO5
We had a talk from Colin Davies from OneNineFourStudio in Newcastle
www.oneninefourstudio.com

He gave us a presentation with his personal top ten tips and how to succeed. So I thought I’d type my notes up to share with everyone.

Lesson 1# - Trust your instinct, training isn't everything.

Lesson 2# - Develop your own identity.

Lesson 3# - Make yourself appear bigger than you are.

Lesson 4# - Get everything in writing.

Lesson 5# - Have a good idea before you do anything.

Lesson 6# - If you don’t think you can do it, d it anyway.

Lesson 7# - Get it proof read.

Lesson 8# - If there’s a problem, discuss it then there is no problem.

Lesson 9# - Be a nice human and people will remember you.

Lesson 10# - Develop your own intellectual property.

LO1
It also presents as a good opportunity for future employment as the company expressed its interest in having students start a placement at the company.

I have to say this talk was really good, it was knowledgeable yet funny. It definitely gave me some things to think about.

Weekly Reflection

LO5
Reflection on my progress this week I can say this I have accomplished everything that I set out to do at the beginning of the week in my 'plan of the week'. This week was all about researching the brief in-depth and all the companies on the list. I accomplished this and I also posted images of my research pages. After my research I could make a decision about which company I wanted to design packaging for. I decided to pick Phonic a mostly on-line record store as I think it will prove a challenge as it is very different from the other options that were available.

LO3
I think that as I have followed my plan of the week exactly is a good example of my time management skills which is a core employability skill that I must always try and improve upon.

Packaging Brief - Research

LO4
My work done this week consisted of researching which company I would like to pick for the packaging brief. So here are some of my research pages.

So you can see I researched into companies such as Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters. This research was critical to help me decide which direction this brief will take.

Plan of the week

LO2
Now that I've finished the group part of the packaging brief, my plan for this week is to start the next part 'Task 2'. We have been given a list of companies that we can design packaging for so this means I'll be researching into all of them to help me decide which I would like to pick.

- Research into 3 different companies

Pinterest

I've finally got a Pinterest account... and I'm addicted.

Packaging - Task 1

LO3
After the research stage it was on to idea generation and development. The group decided to set the difficult to re-brand the loreal product but to try and be as sympathetic to the original design but modernize it.

One thing we didn't like was the squares that they used as a logo, we thought it was a little 80's and definitely not in a good retro way.

So here is out finished packaging we kept the bright pink and just generally updated the whole thing. We also went on to deign a purple volume packaging for night and a summer tropical line.
